The New DayQuil (and NyQuil) Blows ... A Lot

EDIT: Well, Vicks took a half-step and brought back NyQuil as NyQuil D.  No change to DayQuil yet.

I'm sure you've noticed that for the past year (perhaps even longer), grocery stores and pharmacies have been keeping cold products in glass cases, requiring you to hunt down someone with a key that can get the product for you. The problem is that many of the popular over-the-counter cold medications contained a decongestant called pseudoephedrine, and it was a high-theft item because of it's ability to be used to create crystal meth.

Well, Vicks has released new formulations of both NyQuil and DayQuil, removing the decongestant ingredient from NyQuil entirely, and replacing it will a far less effective decongestant in DayQuil. They both contain an antihistamine called doxylamine succinate, but as far as my nose can tell, it's not doing a damned thing. That's right, my Thanksgiving Holiday trip to the cabin has resulted in my whole family catching what we refer to as, the crud.

Back to my rant ... When I asked Annie to pick up the NyQuil, it hadn't occurred to me to have her check the ingredients or look for something better, and it hadn't occurred to me either. We'd always picked up the same product because it worked, dammit. This? This doesn't work worth shit.

So this is just a warning to my friends: check the ingredients list on your cold meds, and make sure that in contains things that, you know, work. If you need a decongestant, make sure you check the labels for your "old standby" and be sure it still has one. (For what it's worth, the new forumulation of DayQuil contains a small amount of phenylephrine as a replacement decongestant, but at roughy a sixth of the dose of the pseudoephedrine, and is fairly ineffective.)

For what it's worth, Advil Cold & Sinus, as far as their webpage is concerned, still contains pseudoephedrine. And it still works. Go figure.

Edit: Clarified some details.

Doh how am I going to make my crystal meth now!!!??

Anonymous said...

this pisses me off to no end! now it's easier to buy fucking meth than it is to get cold medicine for an actual cold! and how are you supposed to compare products? you used to be able to take your time and compare the store brand to the name brand and save some money. not anymore - you have to ask the already overworked and backed up pharmacy staff. This sucks.

This is a real problem. Manufacturers can change the constituents of a over the counter product and are not required to change the name. As a physician, it has gotten increasingly difficult to know what my patients are taking. One, there are often several products with the same name, e.g. SuperFlu, SuperFlu DM, Superflu AB, SuperFlu Nightime, SupeFlu Non-Drowsy. If a patient says they are taking SuperFlu, it might any one of these. The exact formula can vary. SuperFlu might contain ibuprofen while SuperFlu AB could contain acetaminophen. Two, the composition of the formula may change without the knowledge of the patient or the physician.

A glass of port tastes a heck of a lot better than NyQuil and works about as well for me.

Ah! I just did the same thing. This explains why I was doing relatively well at night (using generic NyQuil gelcaps leftover from last year) but remaining completely underwater at work. I can barely talk and breathe at the same time. At least I only bought the box with 20 capsules in it, rather than the larger one.

p.s. I posted a link to your blog on my LJ.

I have been using a saline solution (salt water) to rinse out my nose for the past few months now. I gotta say that works better than any medication I have ever used. The funny thing is my ear, nose, mouth specialist that I used to go does that to me everytime I see him. I am kinda surprised why I didn't start rinsing earlier. Once a day is all it takes.

This is the letter that I emailed to Vicks, the company that owns Nyquil: Hi, just wanted to let you know that it's completely pathetic that a company would stop selling legal products to law abiding citizens because they 'might' be used for some illegal purpose. I'm sorry, but without the pseudoephedrine in the Nyquil, my nose became much more congested during my last cold, after running out of the pseudoephedrine formula, and buying the new version. It is not the same, and it is not as effective. I will no longer be buying Nyquil or Dayquil, they are no longer the same product. I would reccomend talking with police departments on cracking down on people who break the law and use pseudoephedrine to create drugs, instead of punishing cold sufferers because of someone elses mistakes. Thank you for making a great product in the past, I am sorry that you no longer sell it. Thank you for your time.

Anonymous said...

It gets even worse. In Texas they just passed a new law. You now have to present a valid ID to purchase anything with pseudoephedrine. Not only that but they pull out a book and record your information. You then have to sign the book! This is for a non prescription drug. This much information and tracking isn't required to buy alcohol, which kills a lot more people than sudaphed. Welcome to the police state.

Matty said...

Well Vicks had to do something. I'm sure they were losing market share because their products are being placed in areas that are no easily available.

I know this is going to sound harsh, but my suggestion - suffer through the cold. Don't take anything...

I don't claim to have any medical knowledge at all, but it seems that we are a sicker generation than past ones. Maybe a cold here and there would actually be better.

Besides, if you really like that Green Death flavor I would suggest Jagermeister instead.

Anonymous said...

I think they should just legalize meth like in a prescription then problem would be solved.

Anonymous said...

Quit yer bellyaching. In Australia, they simply won't sell you anything with pseudoephedrine in it if you're young and they don't like the look of you. And if they do, you've gotta show ID and go on a national database. And if you specifically ask for it there's no way you're gonna get it.

Anonymous said...

I talked with the local Wal-Greens and they saidit's nearlyimpossable tomake meth with gel-caps and it is only the stupidity of the people that wrote the law (here in Iowa)that makes it so hard to get what we need. If they would OK the gel-caps, no meth and no cold!!! Come on capital hill, wake UP!!!

Anonymous said...

"I think they should just legalize meth like in a prescription then problem would be solved."

Methamphetamine is already a legal prescription medication, its marketed under the name "Desoxyn".

I have not used meth, but I found a happiness effect when taking some medicament with pseudoephedrine.

Like I don't have to worry about anything.

However, if I take another cup of the orange flavored stuff, the effect is just not the same. Hehehe.

But this is another country, more free than yours, so I can have it whenever I need it. :P

It is really hard to find a medicine with just pseudoephedrine in it. Usually they combine it with an expectorant (which I have no earthly idea why)!

"NyQuil is used for the temporary relief of cold symptoms"
From the wikipedia entry on Nyquil.

What I can never understand is why anyone would pay good money to take a bunch of chemicals that only claim to relieve the symptoms. What happened to boosting the immune system with some vitamins? What happened to eating some fresh fruit and drink some hot tea? Why cover up what ultimately you want to cure?

When I have a cold I take medicine and that stops the symptoms in the dust within a few days (or less). A sniffly nose doesn't bother me as mush as actually being sick.

just my opinion.. save you money and spend it on a real cure not a cover up.

Wow. Thanks a ton for referencing this. NyQuil was my number one drug to knock me out quickly. Now it's going to take something 'under the counter' to do the trick.

Why? Because by the time you're sick, boosting your immune system doesn't do you any good. At that point, the cold will run it's course with or without medication. All you can do is make yourself more comfortable in the mean time. For me, that means being able to BREATHE.

I have to disagree, as for the past few days I have had a cold, head sealed practically shut with fluids and nothing worked until I took DayQuil and NyQuil without the Pseudoephedrine. Medecine works differently from person to person, no one is the same. Incidentally, I like the change (however ridiculous the reason for removing it), as pseudoephedrine makes my skin crawl and makes me jumpy when I take it for a while. lol

Anonymous said...

For what its worth, the Vicks.com website [ http://vicks.com/products/dayquil_liquid.shtml ] for DayQuil still reports the pseudoephedrine... Maybe that's about to change, but it isn't listed for the NyQuil though.

Actually, if you want to keep from getting sick altogether, get yrself some Vitamin Shoppe Zinc-C lozenges. Use a lozenge as soon as you feel symptoms. Make sure you have food in yr stomach. Do a lozenge twice a day (ideally after breakfast and dinner). If it is viral, you will not get anywhere near as sick as you normally would. If it bacterial, you may be able to fight it off without antibiotics. Maybe.

Actually, Nyquil has always had doxylamine succinate in it - its an antihistamine like benadryl (diphenhydramine), they removed the pseudoephidrine and didn't replace it with anything. Dayquil now uses phenylephrine instead of pseudoephedrine. Sounds like you took some of the Nyquil before posting this inaccurate blog...

Merky007 said...

what really bugs me about this entire thing, besides it been almost world wide (i live in australia) is that the quantities involved to produce any signifcant illcitt drugs far outway what is comerically obtainable, people need to steal psudeoepedrene of the back of the truck, not over the counter to make illicit drugs, and besides if someone was buying nyquil and sudafed in the quanties needed to make illicit drugs, it kinda would be easy to spot.

Thanks for your comments. I admit that I didn't know that the doxylamine succinate was always in the NyQuil. Regardless, I linked specifically to the Vicks page to illustrate that my point was about the removal of the PSE ... everything else was merely background detail and largely irrelevant. To call the post innacurate as a result is a bit misleading, but I appreciate the clarification.

Doxylamine is primarily used as a sleep aid. Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) will keep you awake. Benadryl is the most common active ingredient in OTC sleep aids.

Your logic is flawed.

"For what its worth, the Vicks.com website for DayQuil still reports the pseudoephedrine... Maybe that's about to change, but it isn't listed for the NyQuil though."

That's because PSE will keep you awake.

Boosting your immune system won't work? Doesn't sound right to me. Call it what you wil. Taking the best care of yourself while sick is the best medicine I can buy.

When a cold is running around the office IF the cold catches me it only last 1/2 the time of everyone else. Without the stuffed upped issues. Because instead of running out to take some drugs that stop the running noses, I push all the snot I can out of my body. Stopping the leaky faucet by wrapping a towel around it is only going to work so long (the towel is you cough 'medicine'). You body needs to get the dead white blood cells out and out fast. I stock up on healthy good and take care of myself and it works like a charm every time.

So enjoy your terrible tasting chemical cocktail if you want to. I will stick with the cures that have been keeping people healthy and happy for hundreds of years. The simple things that the pushers of cold 'medicine' just done want you to think about.

enjoy.

there are MANY natural ways... the best: GARLIC
Granted it STIiiiiNKSSSS!!! but it definitely works

Anonymous said...

Garlic is a natural antibiotic and the fresher you can get the better. I have found that one of the best ways to 'hide' the taste when you want to get a good load of garlic is to make some nice and tasty guacamole and adding diced garlic to it. Something about the fatty taste of the avocados takes the edge off the garlic. I also add some brewers yeast which add more vitamins (some B-complex vitamins that are hard to get for veggies like me).

Enjoy.

Works great--maybe you should use it only for what it's meant for!

pseudoephedrine (and now phenylephrine) is often combined with an expectorant because chances are if you are congested it might spread to your lungs and the expectorant helps you cough up any stuff thats in there. It doesn't make you cough, it makes your coughing more prodctive.

Also, for a long time pseudoephedrine has been the only decongestent that you could get, over the counter or perscription. As someone who is allergic to it (my heart races and beats in an irregular rhythm) I am very glad that they have come out with another formula for cold medicines no matter what the reason. Of course it would be nice for all the non-allergic people to still get thier pseudoephedrine, but frankly I think that the phenylephrine works fairly well.

Shane said...

Just before reading your article, I had bought generic versions of both NyQuil and DayQuil to save some money. I thought I'd check to see if they too had changed their formula. Nope. They still have the old ingredient, so maybe that's a solution for now? And it's cheaper to boot.

I have to say that if you can't get the original formula DayQuil, meth is the best way to get through a workday.

Parents,
Please pay attention to this message. My 2 year old child had a life threatening reaction to Pseudoephedrine. I always thought people made this stuff up until it happened to me. First dose, he went psychotic for four days. We had every test known to man, including a painful lumbar (spinal tap). Second dose several months later, he quit breathing at preschool and, thankfully, a teacher administered CPR. Again, he was psychotic for several days. But this time we were able to trace it. Please check for this ingredient before giving any decongestant to your children. I have seen reports of paralysis and death from pseudoephedrine. By the way, the stuff works great for me but not children.

i get the best advice from my dad for dealing with being sick, either cold or flu, is 1) drink lots of fluids - watered down juices and the like & 2) to back to bed. he's a doctor. he never has recommended OTC 'cold aids' nor does he prescribe antibiotics to anyone other than people with infections that need them. america has been programmed to take drugs to fool you into thinking you're well enough to get back to the grindstone. by the time your throat gets tickly and the mucus in your sinuses have turned from boogers to flood waters it's too late. 7 days before that is when you were exposed, probably by someone at your work necking doh'quil thinking because he can stand without getting dizzy (due to sinus' being stuffed up and now with the help of the antihistamine have turned to sticky green snot that will not come out of sinus cavity no matter how hard you blow) from lack of blood ox and that his sneezing has stopped (see above) that he'll just carry on as normal because it's always about the bottom line. next time the boss gives you shit for staying home just ask him to compair two sick days of pay for just you or the x numbers of days from y number of employee's that you would be infecting + whatever the projected figures for the days income from absent worker bees. bet he shuts up right quick. symtoms are your bodies way of fighting the invaders viril and bacteri (plural of bacteria?). your body needs all the energy to fight off those nasties. the more you move around the less energy you have. and most people do not stay hydrated enough - add any kind of substance ending in '-mine' and you're already in the red (no pun intended). h2o helps with every system in your body - the '-mines' are like diuretics, expelling water. we can't cure the common cold but less people would suffer less if the drug company's had actual health of people in mind. IMHO vick's buckled under pressure. who manufactures vick's? not phizer or GSK, no...it's proctor & gamble - straight from the bible belt. ill-informed congressmen and senator's that take kick backs and bribes with out any knowledge of basically, well, i doubt most of them can even spell 'meth' (that's right, not even the whole gosh dang word - they only got 5 fingers on each hand you know). and if you know anything about the fiacso with the whole aspartame/phenylalanine thing (google it - yes the VP of the USA is named in lawsuit) things are going to go a bit mental. splenda is slowing being added in diet drinks. and i suspect that phenylephrine is a close cousin to phenylalanine after a little cooking and the slack has to be taken up somewhere. so by by DC hello doh'quil. there "is" something new on the market that i discovered by sheer whatever i decided to try it. it's zicam in the cherry flavor lozenges. i was only about 2 hours into pretty constant sneezing that came out of no where. i took one of those "cherry" things and i freekin' swear in about i hours sneezing was gone and in about 2 hours the tickly throat was stopped in it's tracks. felt a little achy but nothing that a couple of advil didn't sort. my mom, a nurse, had mentioned she'd used the zicam when it was only in an up the nose squirty thing and she was impressed with it. i draw the line at powder going up (see what i did there - line...powder) and snot coming out. (yes, that was a joke) so i wasn't squirting anything liquid up there. best thing to do when it concerns anything chemically you might want to put into your body - research what it is. it's not hard in the google age. the drug company's would rather you stay stupid (really google the aspartame thing) as would the already retarded GWB. the more you know the less you're going to want to buy what 'the men' are pushing onto you. and ps- i would love to see the lawmakers who think for a second that all it takes to cook up meth is a couple packets of cold tablets try to whip up a batch. hello?? cookers get the real ephedrine (yes, it can be gotten in it real form) and only resort to psuedo in dire DIRE times. it takes too long to extract what you need and you get a very small amount for all of the trouble. and no, i'm not a chemist, but i do know about chemistry and chemicals. i know enough to not mess with them or try to mix them. a bit of a rant but you guys seemed like you're smart enough to know but a few puzzle pieces needed to be added. good luck and good health. and if everyone at work is coming to work sick - don't GO! common sense people. hazardous working conditions.

Anonymous said...

Don't know if this was already posted, but several major pharma-corps are being or have been sued over PPA/PPB (pseudophedrine-a and b) content in drugs like NyQuil and that ilk. Apparently it can cause strokes in children and old people.

Sheldon said...

I think it's crazy that you can't buy cough medicine without showing ID but I'm sure glad NyQuil has a new formula because late at night when the pharmacist is gone the only thing you can buy is NyQuil . . . everything else is behind the counter and no one can get it for you!!!

Anonymous said...

I could always count on a good night's sleep even with the worst head cold, sore throat, cough, etc. (although I rarely get sick). This week I got a bad cold and haven't been able to stop coughing or breathe at night. I bought my usual Nyquil and noticed it was not as syrupy or as bad-tasting as usual. Needless to say, I didn't sleep at all. I knew something was wrong. The next day I checked the label and found it had been changed. That's the last time I buy Nyquil--a standby in my home for 30 years.

Anonymous said...

I agree that the new Nyquil is useless. Worse, it apparently kept me awake because I barely got any sleep last night. Nyquil used to help me sleep better.

Just because other people are STUPID, shouldn't be takin out on the ones that aint!! In my town I can't find dayquil on the self at all... but nyquil is on the self. What happend to AMERICANS being FREE anyways??? little by little, it's being takin away CUZ of STUPID people

I just looked up the ingredients to Nyquil and other Vicks cold medicines. The Children's NyquilCold/Cough still has pseudoephedrine in it. Go figure.
At any rate... Advil Cold/Sinus LiquiGels are my personal lifesaver. They contain pseudoephedrine 30 mg per pill and 200 mg of ibuprofen per pill. I take two every 6 hours and I can breathe. The ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory, so it takes care of your inflamed sinuses while the pseudoephedrine helps to clear them. My doctors highly recommend it.
Another hint for bad congestion... Robitussin in conjunction with the Advil Cold/Sinus. Make sure the main ingredient in the Robitussin..or generic variable is Guaifenesin.
And then there's always a good old shot of JD! :-)

Anonymous said...

Just another FYI on the whole Dayquil thing...because of the small amount of pseudoephedrine it contains and the fact that it has acetaminaphine instead of aspirin, it is probably the only thing you can take for sinus problems when you are pregnent (I am now 8 mths). Now that they have changed ingredients, my doctor has informed me to stop taking it immediately because they are not sure if their "new ingredient" will cause birth defects. So now the pregnant population is screwed because P&G decided to pull a product that actually works and push off some crap onto us that doesnt even work just to take our money...after I have my baby, I will STILL never use their products...

I think the new law concerning pseudoephedrine is a typical knee jerk reaction from some very ignorant people and politicians. I suffer from sinus pressure that is brought on by changes in the weather and certain grasses and is location dependant. if I leave the north eastern seaboard I'm fine. I think the topic of this blog is great, but I wish people would stay on it. I have tried several of the natural remedies and they are far less effective than pseudoephedrine based medicines. I consider myself a naturalist and avoid taking medication when ever possible, but the reality of sinus pain and how sudden it can appear requires something that really works and works fast, because I have noticed that the longer you wait with sinus pressure the less effective the medication. As for the commits I’ve seen about boosting the immune system that’s great for foreign vectors like virus or bacteria attacking the body but does nothing to control the bodies over reaction to outside stimuli. I have no doubt that the poor effectiveness of the new formulas being pushed on Sinus suffers now will only cause the drug manufactures to end up making new labels saying Original Formula. Lots of people would love to help people who have fallen victim to drug addition, but lets fight it at the point were it becomes illegal. As a preemptive strict this is just piss poor. As for people who take sinus or cold medication to get a buzz or just to sleep better but have no symptoms are closet junkies and will pay for that stupidity by future health problems. Unfortunately this is still a world where the good must suffer for the bad and the ignorance of our elected officials amplifies instead of over comes the ignorance of the masses.

This is not just about runny noses, which, after all, are not usually dangerous! Asthmatics are the ones being left high and dry.

There are only two OTC anti-asthma remedies. One is an inhalant containing pseudoepinephrine (Bronkaid Mist or Primatene Mist). In my experience (50 years of living with asthma), this stuff is mostly useful if you're on your way to the hospital. Many of us have a "rebound effect": you feel much better for about 15 minutes, and then you're worse than you were before. That may sound like a harsh assesment, but I had that reaction a number of times and have ended up in the ER because of it. Actually, I find all inhalers irritate my airways, which obviously limits their usefulness. I've been told by a respiratory therapist that this is not unusual.

The only other OTC asthma remedy combines ephedrine HCl and guaifenesin in tablets (Bronkaid tablets or Primatene tablets). The guaifenesin, an expectorant, is generally a waste, unless you also happen to have a cold: asthma is about constricted air passages, not mucus.

Because of the meth issue, these tablets are now regulated. They must be bought in small amounts from a pharmacy, an ID must be shown, and a record must be kept and signed by the buyer.

This means that if I foolishly start having an attack at an inconvenient time (like the middle of the night, when many attacks occur but the pharmacies are closed) and don't have anything handy, there's nothing useful available outside of a hospital emergency room--an expensive solution to the lack of a pill worth a few cents. It also means a certain level of paranoia: will the feds start following me around if I have a really bad allergy season?

In short, access to a safe, effective treatment for a potentially lethal disease is being restricted. Meanwhile, my teenage daughter's tweaker friends seem to be able to find all the meth they desire. Most of it is imported from Mexico anyway.

Thanks for the Tylonol tip... I am going to try to take back my opened bottle of NyQuil tomorrow, mostly just to send some of the pain back the other way.

This is outright fraud, and I spent a couple of really bad nights awake in a pool of snot for it.

It seems like this huge degredation of the product without notice on the lable is grounds for a class-action lawsuit. I hate such things, but if it is the only way to sting companies into not doing stupid things (like caving in to the political pressure of the moment), then maybe they have some value after all.

You want a class action??? Take a look at this. Vicks "quietly" changed formulations ... again. The original was Acetaminophen 325 mg, Dextromethorphan 15 mg, and Phenylephrine 5 mg (all per 15ml). The new formula is Acetaminophen 325 mg, Dextro , and Phenylephrine 5 mg.(all per 15 ml). The first formula was taken every 6 hours...the new one is every 4 hours...hmmmmm...less ingredients, but take more...and make more...money. Bastards!!!

After two days of congested sleepless misery, I bundled up and stumbled my way down to the drug store to get a bottle of NyQuil (store brand knock-off). Now I'm still awake two doses later, wondering what the hell is going on... and started reading the bottle to see how much I could take safely, when noticed "New Formula - Does Not Contain Pseudoephedrine". Why it isn't working for me all makes sense now... and this is about the dumbest thing NyQuil could of done. Their products notoriety was bound to the fact their product put you to sleep, since it doesn't do that now... what's the point of NyQuil? It's just another mediocre cough medicine that doesn't do jack.

RaleighRob said...

I'm as ticked off about this as everyone else. In NC you can still get Sudafed, the old kind, if you go up to the pharmacy desk. Trust me, I do that. I don't care how long the line is, I'm getting my dang Pseudoephedrine!
Nyquil? Ain't worth diddly anymore. Instead, get the real Sudafed as I mention (the 12-hour formula if you can find it), take an Aleve (or two) and follow it with 2-3 Benadryl. THAT will work for ya!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for your post. I was wondering why the NyQuil I took the last two nights did NOTHING for me. I've always taken NyQuil when I get a bad cold. It used to work great, now it is a waste. I feel ripped off. I think a class action law suit is in order. I had no idea any company could change the formula and still keep the same name and look. I hope advil changes from ibuprofen to birth control pills.

Anonymous said...

As with so many things that have changed for the worse, so goes my Nyquil. I used to take a dose and sleep like rock. In the morning, I not only felt better, but was better. Sleep is a huge factor in recovering from anything and Nyquil worked like magic. Changing formulas without changing the packaging is becoming more prevalent these days. I recently tried to buy a half gallon of ice cream at the store only to find they don't sell them anymore. That's right, after what, 50 years or more?,.. they have reduced the amount to 1.8 quarts, keeping the packaging looking the same and the price higher. Gasoline too - oxygenated fuel gives you 85-90% of the power and mileage of before with a much higher price. Isn't progress fun?

Anonymous said...

I have the flu, but thankfully I also have left some of the original forumla NyQuil. When this is gone, I'll have to start shopping for a new medicine, I guess. I have to be able to breathe in order to sleep, and without a decongestant I can kiss sleep goodbye. Just FYI, here's what the label says is in this original formula:

In one 15ml dose:
acetaminophen, 500mg
dextromethorphan HBr, 15mg
doxylamine succinate, 6.25mg
pseudoephedrine HCl, 30mg

I'll be looking for something similar to this to buy. Farewell, NyQuil, you just lost another 30+ year loyal customer.

Thanks for posting this. My OTCM-of-choice was Tylenol Cold for almost 2 decades and I noticed a difference approx 3 years ago. It just doesnt work. The old formula would dry up all the muccus immediately, take away my headache, and I felt completely comfortable (almost happy). I have tried several of the new versions since they discontinued the old one and NOTHING works AT ALL. I have said and feel the same way as many of you, but I cannot help but feel that there is more to this than the ridiculous meth story. I read somewhere today - while researching the ingredients that actually made TC work in the past -that the main supplier of the plant that ephedrine comes from is China. Could this have something to do with it? If I find the article again, I will post the link here.

i have been sick and suffering for 14 days and spent $50+ on all INEFFECTIVE meds! the nyquil and dayquil do SUCK now! thanks for the tips on the other brands. my fiance went on a mission to go buy me Sudephed (the brand) and came home with 2 boxes of their new PE which is pseudophedrine free!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH needless to say it didn't work...

Anonymous said...

Jen,

Try Contact Cold and Flu, Max. Strength. You have to ask the pharmacist for it and here in NC, you have to sign a log, too. But, it does have Pseudo. in it, 30 mg. each tablet (as well as the other standard stuff). I am so angry at Big Brother for policing me like a little child, and I too have stopped buying Nyquil. Nothing worked for those late night coughs like Nyquil. I have decided that I am going to buy up my max. "allowed" every month (2 boxes) for as long as possible, before they take that off the market, too. Good grief!

Melissa said...

I realize that I am way late and more than a dollar short, but I just finished my bottle of Nyquil that expired in 2003 and needed a new one. And I concur that the new Nyquil blows. I am not nearly as sleepy as I would get from an old school Nyquil buzz, so I am left sitting awake with a stuffy nose that old school Nyquil would have taken out back behind the schoolhouse and made its bitch.

I HATE THE WAR ON DRUGS!@@!@!@!!!

I just tried to get some sudafed yesterday - the real stuff with pseudoepinephrine, and i was refused. not because the pharmacy was closed - that was what happened to me the day before. no, it was because i'm under 18 years old. in florida, apparently, you have to show ID and be over 18 to buy the stuff. that means that you reach the maturity to be drafted into the army at the same time you get the right to buy stuff that lets you breathe through your nose.

go government!

Like most everyone here, I tried the reformulated Nyquil, and it didn't work. I had an OLD bottle of generic Nyquil, and so I searched the drug stores yesterday for a generic store brand that was not reformulated. I found it at Walgreen's. They had JUST gotten it that day, and it had EXACTLY the formulation as the old Nyquil (empty) bottle I had. Of course I had to get it from the pharmacist, show ID, sign a log, and wait 15 minutes while they figured out why their system wasn't promting them with all of the prohibitions when it contained the -gasp- pseudophedrine. I took at least 20 minutes, while sick as a dog and trying to keep my 2 year old from destroying the place, to get my damn "Walgreens Nightime cold/flu Relief D". It was $5.99, and I was able to buy 2 bottles (though I think they were only supposed to sell me 1 at a time).

Incidentally, my dog takes phenylpropanalamine for urinary incontinence. It was one of a handful of effective ingredients in cold medicine for people, but in a TINY number of people it caused terrible adverse reactions. So does ADVIL, and many other drugs- prescription and non. My dogs PPA went from $5 a month, to over $30. Thanks Big Brother for protecting us from ourselves.

Cigarettes and alcohol kill far more people than some damn cold medicine. They obviously have a better lobby than the OTC drug makers.

Although I can't find any online documentation, I HAVE SEEN the original NyQuil formula back on the sheleves- I think it is called NyQuil D? I guess they hard the outcry against the new ineffective formula. Of course, you have to take the card to the pharmacy counter.

Brian Akron Ohio said...

Yes, as far as I know it is back! NyQuil D "Now with Pseudoephedrine" Cold & Flu. Yes you have to sign for it, but at least you can get it. It was found in Ohio at Discount DrugMart. However the Pharmacist didn't even know they sold it up front behind the register, where they only had about 4 bottles. I hope its the real deal, and not poison! lol. Brian (Akron Ohio)

Anonymous said...

The old nyquil kept me up all night. The new nyquil also keeps me up all night except I've still got the cough and runny nose.

Anonymous said...

I too am deeply disturbed by the lack of effective ingredients in Nyquil, but I have different reasons. For years I have used Nyquil (my miracle drug) to rid myself of severe migraines. Interestingly enough, I would take a dose, fall asleep, and WOW, I would wake up pain free. For some whose migraines would often linger for 3 days, this was a real blessing. Now, what am I to do. Nyquil is useless and nothing I try works including so called prescription migraine drugs.

Anonymous said...

I took the NyQuil formula that contains pseudoephedrine for a cold on September 24, 2006, and it caused an ischemic stroke, permanently ruining my life and destroying a promising relationship with the sweetest, most beautiful woman I'd ever met! DO NOT TAKE NYQUIL OR ANY OTHER OTC COLD MEDICATION THAT CONTAIN PSEUDOEPHEDRINE, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!! NUMEROUS STUDIES HAVE LINKED THIS DRUG TO STROKES!! AND IT HAPPENED TO ME!!! IT RUINED MY LIFE!!! I AM PERMANENTLY BRAIN DAMAGED AS A RESULT OF JUST TAKING AN OTC COLD PREPARATION TO RELIEVE SOME COLD SYMPTOMS!!! I should sue P&G for doing this to me!!!!

Anonymous said...

I went to Walgreens today and bought Nyquil D with pseudoephedrine. The pharmacist keeps it behind the counter so the druggies can't buy it. In case you're not aware of it. That's a good thing. So if you're not a druggie and not afraid to show your drivers license you won't have any trouble getting it.

Anonymous said...

My husband suffers from sinus problems and has taken Nyqil (Equate, Walgreens) for years and it never occured to me how bad it is for him. It explains why he is always tired/sick, becaue he is treating himself with Nyquil for years. After a recent doctor visit, he has developed some long term/prolonged use symptoms from using Nyquil and taking it added more health problems than he had before. I agree with the other poster about taking in more healthy food (fresh spinach, fresh OJ) and keeping the meds simple, a decongestant and pain reliever.

Brandon said...

This has to be hurting sales, even though it was designed to improve them by keeping it on the isle shelves. Word is getting out that it doesn't actually work anymore. All those jokes about needing to take it in bed or you'd end up sleeping on the bathroom floor, which really use to be its major selling point, no longer apply. Maybe not healthy, but I use to go through 3 or 4 bottles a year of NyQuil, and now I'd rather walk to the store sick and get something that works then bother finishing the first and last bottle of the new formula NyQuil I bought.

Me said...

Fuck meth heads. I mean it. Fuck them.

I have been sick as a dog with the flu for the past three days, and damned if I can find a cold remedy that actually addresses my symptoms. If I am able to find one, I have to be treated like a common criminal in order to have the privilege to buy the product.

DayQuil...I don't like it. It dries me up a bit, which is good, but it also jazzes me up considerably. I feel very jittery, very shaky. Almost manic.

Anonymous said...

how old do you have to be to purchase nyquil or anything like that? today i tried to buy it and i'm 18 and they said i don't meet the minimun age requirement. is it really that high of an age?

We just discovered the ingredient change when one of us woke up more congested and miserable than when he went to bed. So we're going to miss Nyquil, which has always worked wonderfully before. So absolutely ridiculous to change something that worked so well.

The new pseudoephedrine rules are absurd and draconian. It makes getting effective medication a pain in the neck. At least Advil Cold/Sinus still works for now. Buying it is as much fun as going through the airport security line.
